Anti-bias curriculum is a curriculum with the goal to help children create a positive identity of self and group identity of development in which every child feels supported in achieving their greatest potential. This is achieved by creating a community where all members (children, parents, and staff) are respected, regardless of their race, religion, color, gender, and social economic status.
Staff are required to practice the 3 R’s, Respect, Response, Reciprocate. A term mainly used for infants, but can be applied to all ages. Staff are required to respect each child that they come across in FHPCs care. This mean that no child shall receive more or less privilege than the other child.
In addition to treatment of children, FHPC is a non-religious or non-holiday theme school. This means we do not focus on certain religious customs or holidays that are specific to certain demographics. Yet, we are encouraging of all children, families, and staff to share their customs with one another to promote understanding and respect of the diversity of our world. In achieving an anti-bias curriculum, we provide children with the understanding of self-worth, fairness, and to embrace differences of others and to not allow differences to keep them from respecting and caring for one another.
Reggio Emilia curriculum (REC) is a philosophy of early childhood education in which children are given the opportunity to shape their own learning. Through observation of staff, exploration of events, or interactions among peers and staff, educational adventures can arise in which the children expand on the subject, event, or interactions to discover conclusions.
Example: A Staff member sees the children are playing in a puddle and are making footprints with their shoes. Some are sticking their hands in the puddle and trying to make handprints as well. During circle time, the Staff member bring this activity to their attention and ask the children open-ended questions to entice them to develop hypotheses for their exploration. The next day the Staff provides the children the opportunity to test these hypotheses and come up with a conclusion.
Staff are encouraged to give children the opportunity to explore instances such as these. In this we provide children with an opportunity to learn in a way that gives them the confidence to shape their own learning.
School Readiness curriculum (SRC) is our approach to aiding children to have the building blocks necessary to start their journey of K-12. More and more the standards for children to read, write, and understand arithmetic is more demanding with each passing year. What once was expected to happen in certain grades are lowered a being taught to younger students. FHPCs SRC is the buffer to give the children in our care the tools necessary to be ready for kindergarten.
This is accomplished from infancy to age 5 with each classroom having a set goal to achieve in their classroom.
